Free for research

For studying text: a paper, a dataset, an evaluation, including the Perspective API's research users. Not for running a product, non-profit or not. Engine pinning included so a paper's numbers stay reproducible. A grant runs 12 months and renews on request, and a one-off dataset larger than the allowance can ask for more. Questions

What counts as a check: One text item sent to the check endpoint, the batch endpoint (each item counts), the Perspective endpoint or the MCP server. A request refused for a bad body, a bad key or a rate limit does not count. A cached answer counts, because the work of keeping the cache is the same. An account's test keys share one cap of 100 checks a day, on every plan and without one. They are never billed and never count toward an allowance, except on Research, where they count toward the grant's.
Is there a free plan: No. Test keys are free and need no card, so you can build and test the whole integration before you pay. Live and publishable keys answer only on a plan, and the smallest, Hobby, is $9 a month; without one they get a subscription-required error. Research is free by application.
What happens at the allowance: Research stops until the month resets, with a clear error that says so. Paid plans continue and the checks past the allowance appear on the same invoice at the plan's rate. You are emailed at 80% and at 100%.
Can I limit the bill: Yes. Set a spend cap on the billing page: the most overage you will pay in a period, or none at all. Past it, live and publishable keys answer with a quota-exceeded error until the period resets or you raise the cap, and you get an email when it happens. Test keys keep working.
What happens when I cancel: The plan runs to the end of the period you paid for. After that the account has no plan: live and publishable keys stop, test keys keep working, and nothing is deleted. Choosing a plan again brings the live keys back.

Does the model cost extra: No. A check costs the same whether the rules answered it or the model did. In balanced mode, the default, the model reads every text the rules do not block outright, since rudeness and abuse in ordinary words are beyond a word list; fast mode and Edge-only projects keep every check on the rules. The response says which answered.
Tax: Any sales tax or VAT your country requires is added at checkout by Dodo Payments, and the total is shown before you pay.
